In the dark night, overflying a huge weather system with immense energy-reserves.

Taken from the air in darkest Africa, over the tropical central region, lightning from above mostly looks just like this. A lot of light, but no lightning it self as you are used to see it on ground.

A rainy evening with lightning (and I'm sure about 25 tries just to get this one pic....)

This lightning didn't even reach the ground, displaying its show high up in the sky. Down to the left Tokyo Narita International Airport is visible with its runway 16.
