Altocumulus lenticularis
Lake Wanaka, New Zealand, January 1998

This cloud formation is fairly uncommon but maybe one of the most beautiful. It is formed in mountainous terrain on the leeward side where pressure changes in so called mountain waves create this sight. The word lenticularis means lentil and this is what they look like. One interesting fact is that this cloud is stationary in the sky and does not move with the wind like other clouds.

Altocumulus lenticularis
Queenstown, New Zealand, January 1998

This highly interesting cloud formation is quite unique. The grey layers are very clear and resemble almost oil rings on water. They are in fact lenticularis clouds on top of each other, giving the different colour shifts. They are also sometimes called plate clouds, resembling plates stacked on each other.
